Terrain: forest trails (overgrown and tricky), cycle paths and quiet roads
Longest day yet, tired!
Quickly discovered this morning that drivers get pretty irate when the road is being used and there is a cycle path. To be fair to myself the cycle path was pretty hidden away and after several beeps and me being generally confused at why I was causing so much hostility, one kind driver slowed down to point it out. Ah, alles klar!
My route then took me through a forest ‘footpath’, well it way have been a while ago. Bugs were again very happy I had popped along so ended up essentially getting changed into my winter gear in the middle of the forest. Looked slightly ridiculous but being boiling was better than being eaten alive.

After what I felt was a well deserved coffee at a small roadside place, the rest of the day’s route was pretty non-eventful and managed to cover the grand distance of 39km. Didn’t get my nutrition quite right so had a bit of a sugar low wobble towards the end, oops. Will try to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
Road-side cafe
Nice quiet roads led me to Gutzkow where I intended to stop. Just love the randomness of life at the moment. A sign outside a garage gave the details of a hotel, looked quite grand but called them anyway and they had a room. Being so tired and struggling through in German, I forgot to ask how much and was expecting the worse.
To my surprise, the owner kindly came to pick Ironman Bob and I up, actually taking us the way we had come from and ended up in their amazing place called Villa Eden Peene.
A very cool and relaxed couple run it, Michael and Babsie. I had a massive shared room all to myself for a grand total of 10 Euros.
Michael is a wood worker (makes amazing things including beautifully crafted tree showers – who knew – children’s climbing frames, benches etc, a seriously talented chap) and had made an entire sheltered area outside with an outside kitchen, cauldron to feed 100, a bar and everything. Just too cool.
They kindly invited me to have dinner with them, such lovely generous people, yummy spaghetti bolognese with a meataballs, perfect. This place has a very relaxed, good life feel. People from serious careers that have changed their lifestyle, moved to the country and have a very good life…certainly makes you think about what is possible.
Very lucky to have found this place and would thoroughly recommend anyone staying there (www.villa-eden-peene.com). Not only are the owners lovely but it’s also in a beautiful location, on a river you can canoe down.
Might have a rest day tomorrow but not sure yet.
