Okay, so the weather gods have finally turned against me (or answered me wanting it to be cooler!). Up until now, I have only had one short shower and other than that, glorious sunshine (although at times a little hot to run) but today was just a little different.

As you know, yesterday was my first day properly wild camping. I say that but I was within sight of a house so not so ‘wild’ really.  After fending off a bunch of very excitable 11 year olds – 3 times, I settled down. Then the rain started and continued and continued and then a storm. I think it was my camping baptism of fire. Needless to say it was a fitful night’s sleep with a lot of paranoia that something might happen to my dear Ironman Bob who was sat outside the tent.

Turns out he was fine, if a little wet, and my amazing Hilleberg tent kept me dry and warm.  Thoroughly recommend the Hilleberg Akto if anyone’s looking for a very lightweight and durable tent. They very kindly supplied the tent at a reduced price when I explained my project. Thank you Hilleberg!

Packed up my gear and was on the road by 7am, earliest yet so pretty pleased.  Then, the heavens opened properly, for 5 hours! Within 10 minutes I was completely soaked through with very soggy feet. I’d already booked a place to stay in a small town called Butzow, phew, and frankly there is no better motivation to get a move on and get changed into something dry.

Oh, a policeman stopped me again as I was trying to negotiate a busy motorway entrance. Not looking too pleased with me, I explained what I was doing. He liked my high visibility top so all good and happily let me go.  So far, the policemen have actually been pretty friendly and just seem to be looking out for you, quite comforting really.

Also came across this little gem.  In the torrential rain and miserable weather, this made me smile.  Opposite a farm, eggs, jam and flowers for sale with a lovely little honesty box. Love the countryside.

Arrived at this little B&B in Butzow completely saturated and dripping water everywhere. Thank goodness for the properly waterproof bags I have with me, at least my clothes are nice and dry.

This being said, my iphone isn’t too pleased. After a little googling, I rushed out to get rice and 1 paperclip to remove the sim (I now have 125, useful). Let’s see if it dries out and recovers.

Butzow is a lovely little place (photo taken next morning = blue skies).

I had a chance to stock up on some supplies (cereal bars and dried fruit mainly). Surprisingly for a small town, there is a huge and very beautiful 13th Century church. I went in and lit a candle for my gran, it actually felt quite emotional.  While I’m not myself religious, I am spiritual and am having a number of ‘moments’ along the way.

On my way out, a lovely lady who was looking after the church struck up conversation, we muddled our way through and she very kindly took me on a mini tour, showed me things I would never have noticed.

Check this out. One of the apostles to the right is wearing glasses? (the one touching his nose) This was done in the 15th Century?
