Nice easy one this morning , legs thanked me for it.
Tried to spend the afternoon resting as much as possible but still had a good look around Kiel.
Frankly, Kiel isn’t the prettiest of places (sorry, people from here!). I was told today that is was heavily bombed during the war so is quite modern, but not in a particularly nice way. There is a pretty old city but it’s very small.

The thing Kiel is really good for is shopping 🙂 In need of some new running shoes, I popped into a great running shop called Runners Point (very helpful and English-speaking chap called Timo provided great advice) and purchased myself a pair, looking forward to trying them tomorrow.
We got chatting about what I’m doing and why and he explained that his grandparents had a similar story. They escaped the soviets and went to Germany by foot via the Baltic sea which was frozen solid! Simply can’t imagine.
We both agreed and this is something I think about a lot; the fact that the generations who lived through the world wars are largely gone (his grandmother is in her mid 90s and mine passed away a couple of years ago) and with them the living memory. I just don’t think that telling stories second hand has the same impact. That being said I also believe it’s incredibly important to keep these stories alive to help avoid the same atrocities happening again in Europe (realising it’s not necessarily the only factor but definitely a contributing one).
Now, for those who are interested in kit and in particular running shoes, read on. For those who aren’t, look away now! This risks being a little boring.
I’m currently alternating between two different pairs of running shoe to simulate different running surfaces and using slightly different muscles to try to avoid injury.
Current shoes of choice are Brooks Pure Flow 3 which I love, their tag line is Run Happy. They’re not quite minimalist but not a full blown cushioned running shoes. There’s a good amount of feel but still a little structure there. Tread is wearing pretty thin at this point so need to think about replacing.
The other pair are Saucony Kinvara 4 which I love also, completely different feel to the Brooks with more room for the forefoot and a softer ride. Only trouble is they already have a hole on the upper, so the gaffer tape has had to make an appearance. Essential kit for any trip!

Don’t really want to have to replace shoes due to the upper getting holes so today, I opted for Asics Gel-Lyte33 (apparently more durable than the Saucony’s – hopefully). Another really light pair of shoes (something I like). I’m just going to need to gradually wear them in.
Let’s see if I adapt to them.
