Terrain: lovely flat canal route and hilly country roads
So after a day’s rest, I was back on the road this morning.
Over breakfast though, I read a horrifying story about Syrian refugees. 66,000 Syrian Kurds flooded into Turkey over the weekend due to the advances of Islamic State extending their territorial control and continuing to kill people in their path.
It really is so very difficult to understand why anyone would inflict such huge amounts of suffering on others but clearly ideology is a very powerful thing as has been seen so often in the past, very dangerous.
I read an interview with a National Geographic photographer called John Stanmeyer who has been at the Turkish border documenting the plight of the refugees there. He said one of the weirdest things was the influx of the middle class. They were arriving in smart trousers, dresses and even handbags as if they were just popping out. The harsh reality being that that they have nothing with them. People that have, in an instant, gone from having everything they needed to nothing.
It’s difficult to even imagine what that must be like.
Reading these stories also strengthens my resolve to continue doing what I’m doing to raise awareness for the plight of refugees and fundraising for the Red Cross so that these funds can be used to help refugees in different parts of the world. People who, largely due to war, have been left without a home. Awful.
This certainly gave me food for thought as I started out. And actually, today was easier. For a start, it was cooler and I’d managed to work out that I could continue using the canal path for about a third of the distance so, by definition, flat (yay!).
Then it was all quiet country roads and while there were still hills, it was a little less relentless today so all good (and fewer lorries!).
