Terrain: hills, canal paths (not always official) and some flat road (phew!)
I met a lovely lady over breakfast this morning called Isabelle. She’s a doctor and specialises is non-medicinal care for diseases that affect the elderly, such as Alzheimer’s. She had such a human approach, I found her very inspiring.
She’d also done a lot of cycling around France so first thing, we had the map of France out and Isabelle was showing me the routes she recommends for the rest of this journey, brilliant!
Following my lovely breakfast, it was a bit of a tough one today, partly due to terrain but partly due to a couple of silly choices I made myself.
The day started off with some punishing hills and in thick fog. It made me quite nervous so I ended up largely pushing Bob up the bumpy grassy verge.
Moments of beauty all the same.
Made me smile.
Once I reached a town called Noyon I’d spotted another canal so decided to take the canal path. Pretty soon, it turned into a somewhat non-existent official path but I decided that in order to avoid the lorries, I would continue pushing Bob along. First silly mistake.
Easy.
Hard.
When I got sick of that, I decided to find a way by road, soon to find myself in the middle of a huge factory which I wasn’t allowed to go through (my official route took me through it though!). Not ideal so I found my way back to the unofficial canal path but this time I could only access the other side which was even worse! Second silly mistake. This rough terrain is very pretty but it uses up loads of energy!
I was pleased that the last stretch was on fairly flat road and not too busy.
I’ve now arrived in a town called Compiegne which has a beautiful Chateau and is generally very pretty indeed. It actually reminds me of Versailles.
